Academic departments at B.C. institutions
Students should contact their academic department if they plan to study or work outside Canada as part of their academic program. The department can assist students with course planning to ensure that the courses they take abroad will satisfy program requirements at their home institution in B.C.
Note that some B.C. post-secondary institutions do not have designated study abroad offices, but may provide international opportunities through individual departments.

Institutions outside Canada
If students wish to apply directly to a post-secondary institution abroad outside of their home institution’s study abroad processes, they will be responsible for determining admission requirements and application processes at that institution. Students should also contact their academic advisor regarding the transferability of courses they will be taking at the institution abroad to ensure those credits will apply, where appropriate, towards their B.C. credential.

Other countries
To find out about other countries’ education systems, students should contact the embassies or consulates of these countries in B.C. and elsewhere in Canada. Information is also available through the government departments responsible for post-secondary education in these countries.
Many students wishing to study abroad are interested in the global ranking of post-secondary institutions. A popular and widely used resource is the annual ranking scheme published by the Institute of Higher Education, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, China. This resource provides links to the websites of all ranked institutions.
Students who use this or another ranking system should keep in mind that a globally recognized standard for institutional rankings is not available. Students are advised to familiarize themselves with the ranking methodology employed by the various ranking schemes. Any reliable ranking site should clearly describe the methodology used, and should state any methodological problems or biases encountered.
