B.C. post-secondary institutions
Students should contact their institution’s study abroad office or their academic department regarding the application process. These offices can provide information on study/work abroad programs, eligibility criteria, admissions requirements, and other application matters. Applications for study/work abroad programs are generally processed by the study abroad office or by the student’s academic department.
Institutions outside Canada
Students planning to apply directly to institutions outside of their home institution’s study abroad network should be aware that they are responsible for determining admission requirements and completing the application process on their own.
If students plan to transfer credits earned abroad to their home institution in B.C., they should also be sure to contact the study abroad office and academic department of the B.C. institution to determine if the courses they plan to take will apply as credit toward their B.C. credential. Normally, students will need a letter of permission from their home institution to complete a transferable part of their credential abroad.
Processing of applications varies from institution to institution, and from country to country. Admissions exams, including language proficiency tests, may be part of the application process.
Visas and immigration matters
As part of the study/work abroad application process, students may need to apply for a study and/or work permit, and temporary resident visa from the destination country. Students should contact the Canadian or local B.C. office of the embassy or consulate of the country in which they will be studying well in advance of their departure from Canada for information about specific requirements.
The study abroad office or academic department of a student’s B.C. institution may also be able to guide them through immigration requirements of the destination country. Proof of admission to a post-secondary institution in the destination country, such as a letter of acceptance from an institution, or proof of acceptance for a temporary work position, may be required in order to obtain a study/work permit or visa from that country.
