Number and value of awards
Sixteen awards of $15,000 are distributed each year. There is one award for each of the 15 regions and one award for a student with a permanent disability.
Conditions and regulations
- Grade 12 students graduating in June of each year can apply.
- Only students at high schools that provide courses that are recognized toward the standard graduation of Grade 12 Dogwood Certificate are eligible.
- You are nominated by your school principal based on academic excellence, community service and school service.
- Awards will only be made to those students who register for full-time academic studies at a British Columbia public post-secondary institution in the school year immediately following their Grade 12 graduation.
- Students who are on student exchange in the school year before they graduate, or who plan to pursue other educational opportunities in the year after completing high school without enrolling in a degree-granting study program, may be able to defer the award for one year.
- You must be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident (landed immigrant), convention refugee or protected person, living in Canada, as defined in the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act.
- If you apply for other student financial assistance, the Premier’s Excellence Award will be considered in the assessment of your student loan application within the same academic year.
Evaluation and notification
Applications are evaluated on the basis of:
- academic performance
- service to the community
- school service and participation.
You will also be assessed on the overall quality of your presentation, including supporting documentation.
You will be advised in writing of the committee’s decision late in the school year. If you are successful, you must accept your award by July 17, 2009, and confirm enrolment in a British Columbia public post-secondary institution by Sept. 30, 2009. The award will be issued to the winners after StudentAid BC receives confirmation of enrolment and proof of registration fee payment.
Application process and deadlines
Each January StudentAid BC sends two nomination forms to every high school principal in the province. Principals are asked to choose two students, including one with a permanent disability. These students are then nominated for the award and provided with an application package.
Completed applications are to be returned to StudentAid BC. Applications are assessed based on reference letters, grades 11 and 12 marks, community service and a hand-written, scribed or computer based presentation, only if this is the adaptation normally used by the candidate as documented on their Individual Educational Plan (IEP).
The selection committee chooses the winners in late April. The Premier’s Office notifies the winners in late June.
