Receiving Income Assistance While Studying

Normally, students are not eligible to receive benefits from the B.C. Ministry of Employment and Income Assistance while they are attending post-secondary studies, with the exception of students with permanent disabilities who receive disability assistance.

If you are eligible for income assistance or disability assistance benefits while you are studying, you will be part of an agreement between the Ministry of Employment and Income Assistance and the Ministry of Advanced Education and Labour Market Development.

Under the agreement, the Ministry of Employment and Income Assistance continues to provide maintenance for shelter, food and other needs, while the Ministry of Advanced Education and Labour Market Development, through StudentAid BC, will consider paying these added costs:

  • tuition/fees
  • books/supplies
  • disability allowance (for miscellaneous educational costs)
  • transportation
  • unsubsidized child care (age 11 or under)

Contact your employment assistance worker to discuss your education plans and the financial assistance available to you.
