The Student Transitions Project


The Student Transitions Project links data about students in the B.C. public post-secondary education system with information from their years in kindergarten to Grade 12. The data comes from nine-digit personal education numbers, or PENs, which are assigned to every student entering the B.C. education system.

There are strict procedures in place to ensure that individual privacy is protected. The data exchanged as part of the project cannot be used to make decisions about individual students.

This information is helping the Ministry of Advanced Education and Labour Market Development, the Ministry of Education, school districts and post-secondary institutions plan and manage programs effectively to ensure student success in higher education.

Student Transitions into Public Post-Secondary Education by Region

This document shows student movement from B.C. high school graduation to B.C. public post-secondary education, by region. A transition matrix is shown for each of the 15 college regions in the province. The student transitions project is currently working with other data sources to track student transitions to private and out-of-province post-secondary institutions.


Research reports

Research Results from the Student Transitions Project (June 2008)

This report focuses on high school graduates and their post-secondary transitions over five years. In addition to showing trends in BC’s immediate-entry transition rates, the report examines Aboriginal transitions and compares post-secondary transition rates by demographic characteristics.

Research Results from the Student Transitions Project (December 2007)

This report highlights student transition trends across a four-year period, with K - 12 data from 2001/02 - 2004/05 and post-secondary data from 2002/03 - 2005/06. The results show when secondary school graduates transition into B.C.'s public post-secondary system and what their post-secondary destinations are. The report also includes an analysis of Aboriginal student transitions.

Flow of Grade 12 graduates into and among BC public post-secondary institutions over a multi-year period (October 2007)

This report identifies the number of students that transition to public post-secondary within four years after high school graduation. The report also considers the effect on transition rates of academic GPA, post-secondary programs of study, completion rates, attendance patterns and student retention and movement within the public post-secondary system.

Immediate and Delayed Transitions from Secondary School Graduation to Public Post-Secondary in BC 2001/02 – 2004/05 (June 2006)

This report identifies the number of students in each school district who entered a public post-secondary institution within one, two or three years after high school graduation. The highlights provides an analytical focus on the findings.

This report identifies the number of students in each school district who entered a public post-secondary institution within one year of high school graduation.
