Proteomics centre could revolutionize microbiology
Proteomics: it’s an exciting new field of science that studies how proteins work and interact inside cells.
Working with Genome BC, the Proteomics Research Centre at the University of Victoria was set up to dig deeper into this new area of research. Top microbiologists, primary researchers and graduate students from Canada and the world have joined the team in Victoria. A contributor says the project “has the potential to revolutionize microbiology.”
The centre’s main goal is to use its technologies for customer research projects. The centre also wants to start more partnerships between universities and industry in support of proteomics research.
The possibilities of proteomics research mean good news for many different industries. The health industry could design new tools for diagnosis. The forestry industry could find out how tree cells protect themselves. The pharmaceutical industry could make new drugs. With the UVic-Genome B.C. Proteomics Centre, the study subjects are tiny, but the research and technology benefits are likely to be huge.
