B.C. researchers offer hope to prostate cancer patients
One in every eight men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer after he turns 50. The disease will strike more than 6,500 Canadian men this year – some of whom will become resistant to treatment.
The Prostate Centre at Vancouver General Hospital is tackling this problem. Led by Dr. Martin Gleave, researchers are working to develop a cure for prostate cancer that overcomes treatment resistance. They are well on their way.
Resistance can occur when a cancer cell produces too much of a certain protein. The Prostate Centre researchers have discovered a way to prevent prostate cancer cells from making this protein, allowing treatment of a patient’s tumour to continue.
Not only is this good news for men with prostate cancer – the method is also promising for treating other types of cancers.
