Geologists, engineers get help decoding data through internship program
Innovation and progress are born from fresh ideas and new ways of thinking. B.C.’s graduate students and postdoctoral fellows are putting their ideas to work through an internship program of MITACS, the Mathematics of Information Technology and Complex Systems.
Through this program, students like Rita Sharma work with industry partners to reach a common goal. Sharma, a postdoctoral fellow in computer science at the University of British Columbia, is studying ways to help geologists and engineers decode large amounts of data more quickly and easily.
Using a mathematical formula, Sharma can help other scientists sift through complex information to find what is relevant to their research. For example, she could help a geologist studying a new mineral deposit find other deposits around the world that are most similar to the new discovery.
The MITACS internship program is helping scientists achieve their research goals more effectively.
