Centre works to understand, prevent infection in children

Researchers at the University of B.C. are tackling the Number 1 killer of children in the world – infectious disease.

The Centre for Understanding and Preventing Infection in Children is developing new ways to diagnose disease in children as well as developing vaccines to give lifelong protection. They are also researching children’s innate immunity to disease.

The state-of-the-art centre provides jobs to highly-qualified personnel and brings in funding for research. Its technology and knowledge creation are key for the health and biotechnology sectors. The work done by the researchers has already won multiple patents, and these discoveries have great potential for commercial ventures, leading to increased revenue and opportunities for the province.

Most important of all, more children around the world will survive infectious diseases, thanks to the centre’s work.
