World’s Most Comprehensive System Monitors Alcohol and Drug Use
The most comprehensive monitoring and surveillance system in the world for alcohol and other drugs is being developed in B.C. to help health researchers and policymakers deal with the age-old problem of substance abuse.
The Centre for Addictions Research in B.C. has launched the B.C. Alcohol and Other Drug Monitoring System to gather research and data on B.C.’s experience with alcohol and drug use. The centre’s director, Tim Stockwell, works with a diverse team of researchers from B.C. and around the world.
This system provides useful measures of drug use and the harm that comes with abuse. The project is also helping B.C. gain a place on the world stage of health and wellness research. By developing consistent questions and useful measures for data collection, the system can serve as a pilot for the same type of projects in the rest of Canada and the world.
