Triton Logging
City: Greater Victoria
British Columbia Regional Science & Technology Network Council: Vancouver Island Advanced Technology Centre (VIATeC)
How do you log over 300 million perfectly preserved trees that are submerged under more than 150 feet of water?
With a Sawfish Underwater Harvester.
Triton Logging, based in Saanichton, has developed an environmentally friendly way to harvest forests that have been flooded around the world over the last century in hydro-electric dam reservoirs.
The Sawfish’s patented ability to harvest logs at any desired depth makes it especially unique from conventional underwater logging systems. In addition, the Sawfish can harvest 50 logs without having to resurface or touch the lake bottom. By using a reusable inflatable airbag for each tree, Triton is able to harvest the trees in an efficient and environmentally friendly manner.
The goal is to improve environmental, social and economic performance across every aspect of their business by using innovative environmental technologies, working with communities and First Nations to build sustainable local economic development and create safer reservoirs, and extracting greater value from each tree through eco-certification and branding.
The Vancouver Island Advanced Technology Centre has played an important role in getting Triton’s feet off the ground. With networking, investment introductions, and community support, VIATeC has helped raise the company’s profile both locally and internationally.
And now that Triton is more than established, it is giving back to the local community by hiring local talent and co-op students. Triton also plans to develop a Sawfish operating training program in collaboration with local colleges and universities – thus establishing Vancouver Island as the centre of excellence for the global underwater logging industry.
