StarFish Medical
City: Victoria
British Columbia Regional Science & Technology Network Council: Vancouver Island Advanced Technology Centre (VIATeC)
Victoria’s StarFish Medical is a specialty contract developer and manufacturer of medical devices that provides design, product development and manufacturing services to medical product companies, who in turn sell these products all over the world.
StarFish’s team of engineers, physicists, and industrial designers are experienced in a wide range of technologies, and the company has in-depth knowledge of regulated processes of design and manufacturing. StarFish’s own designs and products are branded, marketed, and sold by its partners and clients, who are typically medical device manufacturers.
Focusing on ultrasound and diagnostic instrumentation, the company’s expert technical knowledge of stringent medical device certification standards used around the world gives StarFish its competitive advantage. Because of this regulatory expertise, StarFish customers can provide their own clients with clearance in the U.S. under Food and Drug Administration regulations, and in Canada (Health Canada) and Europe (the CE Mark).
StarFish works with the Vancouver Island Advanced Technology Centre to help create recognition for B.C., and Victoria in particular, as a centre of excellence for advanced technology. The company was also named VIATeC Company of the Year in 2006.
Working with VIATeC gives StarFish more credibility when promoting itself across Canada and around the world, as well as in the local community. VIATeC works to brand and promote Greater Victoria as a place for skilled professionals to live, work and play, and this helps StarFish and other companies recruit technology workers to the region.
StarFish has created over 30 jobs for skilled workers and continues to hire and train co-op students from the University of B.C., the University of Victoria and Camosun College.
