Gate to Plate Food Services Inc.
Region: Northern B.C.
British Columbia Regional Science & Technology Network Council: Science and Technology Association of the North (Sci-Tech North)
A Fort St. John company has developed the first high-technology mobile slaughter units in Canada. Gate to Plate Food Services Inc. provides humane, custom, on-site slaughter services to producers and processors across B.C. and Canada. This technology is expected to revolutionize the meat industry, as major slaughterhouses are generally located in urban centres far from producers.
Gate to Plate is a federally incorporated private company with an extra-provincial registration. The company has received support from the industrial research assistance program, and is registered with the Ministry of Economic Development as an eligible business corporation.
The Science and Technology Association of the North provided president and general manager Lars Jorgensen and his board with investor information, financial consultation and facilities in the Association’s incubation office. The company has developed approved blueprints, waste management protocols and proprietary systems that have been incorporated into prototypes and patented, and are in operation in commercial settings.
Units have been licensed to slaughter beef, buffalo and lamb, with more units being developed for poultry processing.
The service will be the most humane slaughter available because it eliminates the stress and physical trauma suffered by animals during transport, which also improves the quality of the meat and extends its shelf life. Gate to Plate’s service will also make it easier to follow and document the origin and handling history of food products. The design of the mobile slaughter units allows for products to be certified as organic, halal, kosher, biodynamic and humane.
Today’s consumers demand greater transparency in the food production process, and Gate to Plate’s mobile slaughter units may provide the catalyst that will stimulate expansion in organic and specialty foods. Lower costs in production, due to eliminating transportation costs, may help lower the costs of specialty products, making their production more economically viable.
Gate to Plate Food Services has identified a need and created a sustainable technologically advanced solution that has value for the region, the province and the country.
