Where do you want to live when you grow old?
Growing old is challenging – mentally, physically and emotionally. But it can be easier or more difficult, depending on where you live.
Researchers at the University of Victoria are working to find out what makes communities more or less “age friendly.” Through the Age Friendly Cities and Remote and Rural Communities project, researchers aim to develop a report card that ranks how easy or difficult it is to grow older in different communities. The project brings together talented researchers from across the country with provincial, local and corporate participants to reduce barriers to the elderly.
The benefits of such a project are numerous. For example, reducing physical and emotional barriers results in lower health-care costs. Increasing the mobility and independence of seniors allows them to be socially and economically active later in life.
B.C.’s efforts to improve age-friendly environments benefit seniors around the world, now and for the future.
