Five New B.C. Universities

Changes to the University Act on Apr. 29, 2008, paved the way for five new B.C. universities that will give students greater access to university degree programs. Designations included the University of the Fraser Valley, Kwantlen Polytechnic University, Vancouver Island University, Capilano University and Emily Carr University of Art and Design.

B.C. Launches Advanced Internet Network For Research

Minister Coell joined the BCNET celebration for the expansion of broadband Internet capacity enabling institutions to share large data files to better facilitate their research. The new capacity is so powerful, it has the equivalent ability to download 72 feature-length films in 2 seconds and enable video conferencing for a greener B.C.

Oldest UBC Building Transformed for Chemistry Research

Advanced Education Minister Murray Coell is joined by officials in front of the UBC Chemistry Building, which has been transformed into a world-class chemistry research and teaching facility after serving students for over 80 years. The renewal also included upgrades to meet modern environmental building standards and improve operating cost efficiency with the help of $16 million from the Province.

UCFV Celebrates 'Green' Trades and Technology Centre Opening

$15M for New Academic Building at Royal Roads

On Feb. 1, 2008, Honourable Murray Coell, Minister of Advanced Education announced that the Province will be providing $15 million to Royal Roads University to fund the first new academic building to be constructed since RRU’s transition from a military college to a university. The proposed new academic building will add a total of 4,571 gross square metres, and will include space for classrooms, seminar rooms, computer labs and academic offices. B.C. to Fund World-Leading Climate Research

On Jan. 25, 2008, Premier Gordon Campbell and Advanced Education Minister Murray Coell announced that the Province will seek legislative approval for $94.5 million to create the Pacific Institute for Climate Solutions, which will bring together top scientists, researchers, governments and the private sector to develop innovative climate change adaptation and mitigation solutions.
