Universities and Institutes Branch

The Universities and Institutes Branch provides direction, leadership and support to six public universities and five public provincial institutes.

Other key areas of responsibility:

• The branch also provides leadership and support for various program areas in the public post-secondary education system, including:
  • Academic and fine arts programs
  • Double the Opportunity, which is increasing the number of computer science and computer and electrical engineering graduates
  • Health (e.g., nursing, pharmacy)
  • Interprovincial agreements (veterinary medicine, optometry, orthotics and prosthetics)
  • Justice and public safety
  • Medical school expansion, which is nearly doubling the number of doctors educated in B.C.
  • Teacher education

Liaises with:

• The University Presidents' Council of B.C.
• Other branches of the Ministry of Advanced Education and Labour Market Development
• Other provincial ministries
• Other provincial and territorial governments
