Adult Opportunities Action Plan
As part of government’s commitment to make this province the best educated, most literate jurisdiction on the continent, the Ministry of Advanced Education and Labour Market Development has developed an adult literacy strategy – the Adult Opportunities Action Plan [PDF 125kb].
The plan’s goals are to:
- Reduce barriers and increase participation in adult literacy programs and courses.
- Improve literacy rates for key populations, including Aboriginal people and immigrants.
- Co-ordinate quality programs that produce results.
Part of the plan is making all adult basic education tuition free in B.C., which was announced Sept. 7, 2007. This is taking place in three stages:
- Effective immediately, all students can take adult basic education courses free of charge through the Province’s virtual school, LearnNow BC.
- Starting in January 2008, all students will have access to tuition-free adult basic education courses at 18 public post-secondary institutions around B.C.
- And effective September 2008, all students can take free adult basic education courses through school district continuing education centres.
The Adult Opportunities Action Plan aligns with ReadNow BC.
