How to Access Student Services

Contact the Centre Coordinator at each campus for an initial appointment. Documentation of disability is recommended. Apply for interpreters, taped books, advanced registration, technical aids, etc. approximately 4 to 6 months prior to starting classes.

OC offers programs for adults with special learning needs (personal and social development underlie all aspects of these programs). Two semesters, approximately five months long, are offered each year. Programs are currently offered at the Salmon Arm, Armstrong, Kalamalka, Kelowna and Penticton centres. Offerings vary from centre to centre as student demand warrants and resources permit.

Preparing for Access to Careers and Education (PACE) Program

This is a one year, part-time, certificate program to help students reach their own educational, vocational, and personal development goals. The program will focus on developing success skills for the classroom and employment.

  • Some students may choose a modified and supported second year speciality within the Supported Access to Modified Education (SAME) Program.
  • Students will do career awareness research and will prepare for employment through the development of appropriate workplace attitudes, values, and behaviours.
  • Students will participate in course work which develops communication, assertiveness, stress management, and conflict resolution skills.

Successful completion of this program will prepare students for:

  1. 2nd year in the SAME Program, an inclusive, modified form of a regular OC program, or
  2. competitive entry-level employment; or
  3. supported employment.

Entry Criteria

  • participate in an intake interview with the ASE instructor;
  • have an identified cognitive disability;
  • be 18 years or older;
  • have the ability to learn in a group setting;
  • have the ability to make routine decisions independently;
  • be motivated to participate in this program;
  • be emotionally stable (have no behaviour or emotional problems that would significantly interfere with the learning or safety of self or others);
  • have basic literacy skills (Grade four reading and/or listening comprehension);
  • have the ability to use public transportation or have alternate transportation;
  • have the desire to explore vocational options; and,
  • have letters of reference from two of:
    • teacher
    • counselor
    • social worker
    • employer/workplace supervisor

Independent Living Program

This program is for students who wish to expand their life skills to increase their independence.

Admission Requirements

Applicants must be 18 years of age.

Applicants must be motivated to learn and be able to work well individually and in a small group or classroom situation. A non-verbal or multi-disabled student may be required to attend with a support person (parent, guardian, care giver) who will be required to participate in a learning contract.

SAME Program

This two-year program will enable students with cognitive disabilities, who cannot meet entry criteria, to access modified versions of OC programs in pursuit of their own personal, educational or vocational goals.

Students participate in a modified form of a regular OC program along with a course which will provide supports. The program is designed around an Individual Education Plan (IEP). Successful students will receive an anecdotal grade and a modified certificate.

Admission Requirements

Successful completion of PACE and recommendation of ASE and Vocational instructors. Some students may enter directly into the SAME program on the recommendation of ASE and Vocational instructors based on one or more of the following:

  • previous attendance in the ASE program and recommendation from the instructor;
  • previous attendance in an ABE fundamental program and recommendation from the instructor;
  • recommendation from an agency/advocacy group or high school;
  • recommendation from employer or work experience supervisor - (recommendations must indicate clear and realistic goals supported by prior experience).

Year One

In year one, students will participate in six Employment Preparation courses. The focus in these courses will be on the development of appropriate workplace attitudes, values and behaviours, as well as on verifying goals, choosing their second year speciality, and developing an IEP. Students may be required to complete the Educational and Vocational Goal Setting course if they have not previously done any work on defining their goals or identifying strengths and weaknesses.

Year One Courses

Educational and Vocational Goal Setting - 40 hours (5 hours per day for 8 weeks, and/or all of the following courses):

  • Vocational and Academic Assessment and Goal Setting
  • Employment Preparation II
  • Effective Vocational Interpersonal Techniques
  • Working World II
  • Learning Strategies
  • Educational Planning
  • ASE Electives, for example:
    • Basic Academics - 2 hours per day for 5 months
    • Introduction to Computers - 2 hours per week for 5 months

Year Two

In year two, students will participate in a combination of two courses under the overall title of Vocational Assistant: the Vocational Skills Course in which students will focus on a vocational specialty, along with a course which will provide supports. These courses will be designed around the IEP. Successful students will receive an anecdotal grade and a Vocational Assistant certificate.

Year Two Admission Requirements

Successful completion of SAME program year one and recommendation of ASE and vocational instructors, or recommendation of ASE and vocational instructors based on one or more of the following:

  • previous attendance in the ASE program and recommendation from the instructor;
  • previous attendance in an ABE fundamental program and recommendation from the instructor;
  • recommendation from an agency/advocacy group or high school;
  • recommendation from employer or work experience supervisor (recommendations must indicate clear and realistic goals supported by prior experience).
