How to Access Student Services

Prospective students are encouraged to contact the College Access Instructor or a College of New Caledonia counselor. Referrals from advocates, school or agency personnel are welcomed.

It is strongly recommended that prospective students contact the College at least six months in advance.

Techniques for Access, Reaching Goals and Employment Training (TARGET)

The TARGET program teaches students skills which will help them succeed in future supported employment situations. This program combines classroom instruction with work experience placements. Course content includes:

  • Basic Employment Skills Training: Work attitudes and expectations, general work skills, safety, conflict resolution
  • Communication and Interpersonal Relations: Conversation skills, relationships, assertiveness, community interactions, problem solving.
  • Success Strategies: Personal maintenance, values and self-esteem, rights and responsibilities, time management, goal setting, critical thinking, resumes and interviews, adapting non-work life to support employment success.
  • Work Interest Assessments: Data will be gathered from a wide range of sources
  • Work Experience Placements: Students will participate in work experience placements for approximately two days per week.

Job Education and Training

This program is offered to adults with developmental disabilities who want to pursue employment. It teaches skills necessary to independently find and keep a job. Such skills include:

  • job orientation
  • job search
  • interview skills
  • job maintenance skills
  • assertiveness and interpersonal skills

The program includes unpaid entry-level job placements. Each student participates in 3 job trainings, lasting 4 weeks, 40 hours per week.

Job Education and Training Program

This program prepares graduates for entry-level positions in the workforce. There are five courses offered which are focused on employment skills. Students alternate their classroom theory with job training provided by interested employers.

The courses included are:

  • job orientation
  • assertiveness and interpersonal skills
  • interview skills
  • job maintenance skills
  • job training

Students exiting the program move on to paid entry-level employment, further job training or specific upgrading.
