Aboriginal Education

Memorandum of Understanding

On March 11, 2005, the B.C. Ministry of Advanced Education and Labour Market Development signed a landmark memorandum of understanding with representatives of the province’s post-secondary institutions, the federal government and key Aboriginal organizations.

Signatories to the memorandum of understanding are:

  1. Ministry of Advanced Education and Labour Market Development
  2. First Nations Education Steering Committee
  3. First Nations Summit
  4. B.C. Assembly of First Nations
  5. Metis Provincial Council
  6. United Native Nations Society
  7. B.C. University Presidents’ Council
  8. University College Presidents
  9. B.C. College Presidents
  10. Federal Government
  11. Indigenous Adult Higher Learning Association

The signatories form an ongoing post-secondary education partners group. This group continues to work together on issues like improving access to post-secondary education for Aboriginal learners and streamlining the transition of Aboriginal students from high school to post-secondary institutions.

This collaborative approach builds on the successes of the education partners group that was formed in 1999 to improve outcomes for elementary and secondary learners. A memorandum of understanding for K-12 was signed, declaring a shared commitment to improve education outcomes for First Nation students. This formed the basis for common agenda-setting, increased co-ordination and strong ongoing partnerships.
