Aboriginal Transitions Research Fund
The Aboriginal Transitions Research Fund (ATRF) was a two year, two phase initiative (2007/08 and 2008/09). There is currently limited data on Aboriginal learner transitions – the ATRF projects will provide empirical evidence that supports specific actions, and will also evaluate the implementation of these actions.
3 projects were funded, each to address a different transition point on the student’s journey:
- UBC: Undergraduate to Graduate Phase I [PDF]
- UBC: Undergraduate to Graduate Phase II [PDF]
- UVic: Aboriginal Institute to Public Institution [PDF]
- TRU: A Learning Bridge for Aboriginal Adults [PDF]
- TRU: Adult Basic Education to Post-Secondary Education [PDF]
The three projects stress the need for a holistic approach. They offer an opportunity to learn how important cultural and social supports, Elders, and peer mentors are to the success of Aboriginal learners pursuing their educational aspirations.
Aboriginal Forums
In March of 2006, the Ministry held its third annual forum [PDF]. The focus of the forum was the Ministry’s proposed Aboriginal Post-Secondary Education Strategy.
The Fourth Annual Aboriginal Post-Secondary Education Forum was held on Nov. 21, 2007, and involved 134 participants.

- Forum Discussion Paper (Nov.2007) [DOC]
The forum’s theme was Choice for Aboriginal Learners – Moving Post-Secondary Education Policy and Programs Forward Through Dialogue and Engagement. It brought together stakeholders from Aboriginal communities, government and the post-secondary education sector to:
- Explore partnerships in the context of the New Relationship.
- Discuss the role of private Aboriginal post-secondary institutions.
- Provide the opportunity for stakeholders to share innovative initiatives that increase Aboriginal learner success in post-secondary education throughout British Columbia.
